Lighting: Use Natural Settings to Add Authenticity to Videos

When someone thinks of professional video production, they typically envision a studio, green screen, and professional lighting rig. While studio lighting offers clear visuals and the elimination of harsh shadows, sometimes ambient light is the better option. Ambient light is the light that the sun and basic light fixtures provide.

When used in video production, it can have a positive impact on the authenticity of your video. The clip below features a terrific example of using available light and blending it with traditional production lights and practicals.

Lighting in On-Location Shots

Shooting on-location is a key factor in promoting businesses, and using ambient light has several advantages. For example, if you own a restaurant or a bar, your ambient lighting can capture the mood.

Whether it’s a low-lit romantic table or a dance floor with flashing lights, ambient lights provide the most authentic visuals. Professional video marketing companies have special equipment that can capture clear, high-quality footage in these low-light situations.

It’s better to schedule exterior shots or B-roll footage of employees performing work outdoors at dawn or dusk, when the light is warm and colors are vivid.

Seasonal Videos

Ambient lighting should change with the seasons. Viewers can relate more to footage when it reflects the current setting. For example, winter in Washington, D.C., brings gray ambient light that looks beautiful when it bounces off of snow.

Shooting outdoors and on-location with a local video production company can help add authenticity to your marketing video. This lighting can be mixed with studio shots and different types of footage to really showcase your business.

Ambient Light in Customer Testimonials

Using ambient light adds an authentic, documentary-style feel to marketing videos. The message coming from the customer will not seem forced or scripted when you incorporate as many natural aspects as possible.

Even if the interview is planned, it won’t come across that way, thanks to the talents of a professional video production company.
