Video Production Basics

Using video production basics is an excellent way to market your business online. In a growingly digital world, the online sphere is where your potential consumers and clientele are located. It is important to explore every avenue available to engage your customer base.

We know that videos are great platforms in which to disseminate information about your business in an approachable and relatable fashion, we’ve talked about this before.

But where do you start?

For most, making videos does not come naturally. But before you start working with a video production company, here are few basics you should know before the camera starts rolling.

Stick to the (Video Production) Basics

Keep It Simple

It is best to not make overly complex or complicated videos that can detract from the message you’re trying to get out. While you want to make sure that you do a good job displaying your business’ product or services, you don’t want to over complicate things.

Remember your priority is video production basics to put forth the best representation of your business. Keep the focus on the message that you are trying to send. Keep it simple and deliver your message in a clear way that doesn’t disappoint.

Be Brief

We have a short attention span. With information coming at us at all directions, consumers only allow a very short amount of time to get their attention and deliver a message. Potential consumers and clients live busy lives, and simply don’t have much time to devote to watching videos. So it’s a best practice to keep your videos short and sweet, particularly those that will be used in email or social media marketing.

That means keep your videos between 1-3 minutes, depending on the topic. That time span gives you enough time to thoroughly deliver your message and not lose the attention of your audience. If there is a lot of information you want to share, consider breaking it down into multiple shorter videos or a campaign. Short and sweet can often be the best method.

Take Notes, but Don’t Read from a Script

Before filming your video, it is a good idea to take some notes on what you want to say. Make bullet points of the most important points that you want to make sure to mention in your video. While you can keep these notes nearby during filming, don’t read from script. 

Most of us aren’t familiar with reading off of a script or from cue cards, and doing so can make your video sound forced, bland and stuffy. Mention your important points, but do it in a natural way; not line for line off of a script. Your production team can guide you through this and provide helpful hints.

Relax and Let It Come Naturally

As we mentioned earlier, being in front of a video camera does not come naturally to most people. It may take a little while to get used to it and start to relax. Take your time and practice as many times as it takes to make you feel comfortable. While being on camera may not feel natural, discussing your business should be second nature.

Relax and do your best to act naturally. Conversational tones are very organic and believable. You want people to trust what they are watching. Just think of it like discussing your business with a new acquaintance. Let your passion for your company shine through naturally.

Don’t take it too seriously; it’s ok to have fun with your videos. Most production are not live, if you mess up you can stop down and re-shoot the take. It’s part of the process. Even professionals do multiple takes.

Encourage Feedback and Give a Call to Action

One of the benefits of making a video is that it makes you approachable to your potential and current clientele. In fact, videos are a great way to encourage feedback. People love to be asked for their opinions and they want to be heard. Ask questions in your video that seek out responses from the viewers. 

Use your video as a platform to issue a call to action. Encourage viewers to comment or visit your website or location. This can be the perfect ending to your video. Implore viewers to take action regarding your business, and utilize videos to connect with your target audience and get them moving.
